A Samoyed Gardener Carries the Morning's Roses in a Little Basket
A fluffy white Samoyed stands beside a sunny window, a basket of pink and cream roses held carefully in one white-gloved paw. He wears a sage green coat and a tan work apron with a few little garden tools tucked into the pocket, and a stone wall and trailing leaves can be seen behind him. His dark eyes and black nose stand out like buttons in all that white fur, and the famous Samoyed smile makes him look delighted with the harvest.
Samoyeds are thick-coated, friendly dogs bred in Siberia to herd reindeer and keep their families warm. They are cheerful, social and often chatty. The dense double coat sheds a lot and needs frequent brushing, and these dogs prefer cool weather and plenty of activity. As with any dog, a garden has hazards, because some flowers and plants are harmful if eaten, so ask your vet which plants are safe in your yard.
The softly lit scene feels calm and tidy, and the painter let the white fur glow against the muted greens and browns. The roses are the only strong color in the picture, so your eyes go straight to them, and then to the gardener's gentle face. A royal gardener must be patient and gentle, and a Samoyed, with his sweet, fluffy manner, seems well suited to such work.
If the palace roses bloom well this year, the credit probably belongs to this smiling, snowy fellow.
