A Samoyed Explorer Looks to the Horizon Holding a Brass Telescope
A fluffy white Samoyed wearing a dark green explorer's coat with brass buttons and a small gold epaulette stares off to one side, his dark eyes alert and his ears perked. A brass telescope rests against his chest, and a white cravat peeks out at the neck. The background is a soft gray and tan, with pale curtains and the hint of a distant landscape, and the white fur seems to glow against the dark coat.
Samoyeds come from Siberia, where they helped herd reindeer, pull sleds and keep their families warm. That heritage means they are energetic, hardy and happiest in cool weather with plenty of activity. Their double coat sheds heavily, so regular brushing is a must, and they should never be left in a hot car or hot yard. They are social dogs who love company, and a vet can advise on keeping them healthy.
The artist has created a lovely contrast between the snowy fur and the deep green coat, so the explorer's face is the brightest part of the picture. The telescope's brass shine adds a warm note, hinting at adventures beyond the frame. Explorers in old portraits usually look determined, and this one looks cheerful as well, as though the coldest mountain and the widest sea would both be welcome.
Wherever his expedition leads, he will bring a smile and perhaps some fur for the camp bed.
