Four Puppies Lined Up in the Tall Grass Like a Committee Waiting to Start
Lined up shoulder to shoulder in the long summer grass, four sable German Shepherd puppies look like a small committee waiting to be called to order. Each one has a slightly different expression: the pup on the far left gazes off to the side, the next one stares straight ahead with ears at attention, the third tilts his head with a sweet, sleepy look, and the last one peers out with a hint of mischief. Behind them, an open patio door reveals a couch with a blanket, a pair of sandals and a jacket on a hook, as if the whole family just stepped out to join the fun.
Tall grass is a puppy wonderland of smells and textures, but it also hides a few things worth watching for. Ticks and fleas often lurk in long grass, so ask your vet about appropriate parasite prevention for a young dog and check their coat after outdoor adventures. Foxtails and other grass seeds can work their way into ears, paws and noses, so a quick look between toes and inside ears is a good habit. German Shepherds have a thick double coat that can easily hide burrs and seeds. Gentle brushing after time outside keeps the coat healthy and gets your puppy used to grooming.
Regular checks also build trust, since a puppy learns that being handled leads to praise and maybe a treat.
These four look ready for an afternoon of rolling, sniffing and chasing whatever moves through the grass.
