Four Yellow Lab Puppies Surrounded One Poor Slipper

A single brown slipper is surrounded by four yellow Labrador Retriever puppies, each one nosing, pawing or chewing at it. Heads are bent, ears hang forward and eyes shine with total concentration. The rug is rumpled, and the room behind them has scattered clothes, a basket and a green plant.

Chewing is one of a Lab's favorite activities, and a slipper is a very tempting target. Labs are among the breeds known for mouthing and chewing, especially while teething, which usually lasts for several months. The best approach is to give puppies plenty of acceptable things to chew, and to keep shoes and slippers out of reach. If a puppy picks up a slipper, trade it for a chew toy and praise him. Never chase or scold, as this can turn it into a game. Swallowed fabric, rubber and foam can cause blockages, so contact your vet if you think your puppy has swallowed anything. Frozen chew toys can soothe sore gums. Giving puppies lots of exercise and mental stimulation also reduces destructive chewing, since a tired puppy is a good puppy.

The slipper is doomed, but the fun it's providing is priceless. Four puppies, one shoe, and no regrets. Later someone will find a few stray threads under the sofa, and everyone in the room will pretend not to know a thing about it.
