Five Shepherd Puppies Discovered the Kiddie Pool and Went for It
Water is flying in every direction as five black and tan puppies wade, paddle, and tumble around a blue kiddie pool. The pup in the back looks over his shoulder, another paws at the water, and a fuzzy face in the front tilts up with wet whiskers. The patio is wet with splashes, and sandals, a watering can, and garden baskets wait behind them.
Shallow water is a gentle introduction to swimming for many dogs. Keep it just deep enough for splashing, supervise at all times, and let the pups decide how far to go. German Shepherds often enjoy water, but each puppy is different, and some need coaxing with treats and toys.
Be careful on hot days. Puppies can overheat, so provide shade and fresh drinking water. Empty the pool when playtime ends, since standing water can grow bacteria and attract mosquitoes. Dry their ears and coat afterward, especially in the folds, because damp skin can lead to irritation. If your pup drinks too much pool water or seems unwell afterward, talk to your vet.
For now, it is a noisy, wet, and happy afternoon, and there is no sign it will end until someone brings the towels. Wet puppies tend to nap very deeply afterward, so expect a quiet evening. Wet puppies tend to nap very deeply afterward, so expect a quiet evening, a few damp towels, and some very sleepy shepherds.
