A Rottweiler Puppy Made Herself at Home in a Basket of Wildflowers
Her chin tilted up and one rust-colored paw hanging over the edge, a black and tan puppy settles into a wicker basket filled with daisies and sprigs of lavender. Her ears are soft, her dark eyes look off to one side, and a bit of soil dusts her fur. Potted plants, a watering can, and a stone wall frame the garden corner.
Flowers and herbs can brighten a garden, but not everything is safe for puppies. Lavender in small amounts is generally mild, but large amounts of some plants can upset a dog's stomach, and essential oils can be harmful. Avoid plants such as lilies, azaleas, and sago palms, and check what grows near your yard. If a puppy chews a plant, call your vet or a pet poison hotline.
Rottweiler puppies love to be near their people and often follow them into the garden. Give her a safe zone and a job, like carrying a toy, so she learns what is hers to chew. Positive training with treats works well for this clever breed, and short sessions keep it fun. Early socialization to new smells and sounds, like those of a garden, helps a puppy grow confident.
For now, she looks very comfortable in her flowery nest, and the garden seems proud to have her. The scent of lavender drifts over her.
