The Toy Box Was Full of Toys Until the Basset Puppies Climbed In
A wooden toy box has been taken over by four tricolor Basset Hound puppies, and the contents are no longer in charge. A plush gray whale lies at the front, rope toys spill over the edge, and a jumble of blue and gray clothes fills one corner. Behind them the living room shows signs of a very busy morning, with socks, blankets, and a woven basket scattered across the floor.
Every puppy gets a phase where everything within reach becomes a toy. Chewing is a normal way for young dogs to explore and to soothe sore gums while their adult teeth come in, so the best plan is to give them plenty of safe options. Rope toys, soft plush, and rubber chews made for puppies are good choices. Check them often, and take away anything that is torn or falling apart, since small pieces can be swallowed.
Socks, clothing, and fabrics are tempting but not great chew items, because swallowed cloth can cause a blockage that needs a vet. Keeping a basket of dog toys that rotates every few days can help too, since puppies often find an old toy exciting again after it has been out of sight.
The four in the box look innocent, with their wide eyes and tilted ears. The state of the room suggests otherwise, but nobody can stay upset when the culprits come with that many wrinkles. They seem perfectly happy with the new organization, whatever the grown-ups think.
