Walt Drives, June Rides Shotgun, and the Middle Seat Has Strong Opinions

AI imagetortoiseshell catpickup truckgrandparents

Walt has both hands near the wheel, June is beaming from the far side of the bench seat, and Mabel the tortoiseshell sits upright right up front like she owns the title. The cab of their old pickup has seen better decades, with faded paint, a rust-speckled door frame and a worn leather seat, but it clearly holds a lot of good memories. Through the windows behind them glows a warm, cluttered room with a lamp, shelves and a cozy throw, as if the truck has been parked right at the heart of home. Mabel stares out with bright golden eyes, ready for wherever this ride goes.

If your cat does travel by car, the safest place for them is inside a secure, well-ventilated carrier that is buckled in or wedged so it cannot slide. A loose cat can distract the driver, slip under the pedals, or be hurt by a sudden stop. Getting a cat used to the carrier at home first, by leaving it open with a soft blanket and treats inside, can make trips much less stressful. Short practice drives help too. Never leave a cat alone in a parked vehicle, since temperatures inside can climb or drop quickly, and talk to your vet if your cat gets very anxious or carsick.

Some couples share a song on the radio. Walt and June share the bench seat with a small, opinionated copilot, and judging by those smiles, they would not have it any other way.
