One Porch Swing, Three Sleepyheads, and One Paw Over a Face

The chains of the porch swing creak just a little, and that gentle sway has done its work. Walt has nodded off with his glasses sliding down his nose, June rests her head against his shoulder with her eyes closed, and Mabel lies curled into a tight tortoiseshell ball across their laps, one paw tucked over her face. Behind them, the blue-gray siding, a screen door, a pair of rubber boots and a jumble of potted plants and garden odds and ends tell of a busy morning that has turned into a well-earned rest.

That curled-up, paw-over-the-nose position is a classic cat sleep pose. It conserves body heat and protects the face, and you will often see it on cooler days. Cats choose laps for the same reason: people are warm, familiar and safe. For older adults, quiet moments like this with a pet can be genuinely soothing. Many people find that stroking a calm animal helps them relax and feel less alone, and caring for a pet gives each day a little shape. If you nap outdoors with a cat, make sure they cannot wander off unnoticed, or keep them on a harness and lead if they are not used to being outside.

Nobody here is in any hurry to wake up. The garden chores can wait until after this nap, and possibly until tomorrow.
