One Rocking Chair, Two People, and a Cat Who Couldn't Care Less

One wooden rocking chair, two people, and no complaints. Walt and June have squeezed in together, cheek to cheek, smiling softly in their cream cable-knit sweaters as the chair tips gently back and forth. Sunlight streams across the room, catching a mug on the side table, a pair of reading glasses resting on an open book and a basket of yarn with knitting needles poking out. On the patterned rug in front of them, Mabel the tortoiseshell is fast asleep, stretched long with her chin on her paws, completely unbothered by the rocking just inches away.

Rocking chairs and cats are a classic pairing, but the curved runners can pinch a tail or paw that strays too close. It is a good habit to glance down before you start rocking, especially if your cat likes to nap at your feet. Cats tend to sleep where they feel safe and near their people, and a sunny patch of rug close to a favorite chair is prime real estate. Older cats in particular often seek out warm spots on the floor to soothe stiff joints. A soft mat or folded blanket in that sunny corner can give them extra cushioning and a little more comfort.

Some afternoons are made for doing almost nothing at all. A slow rock, a warm beam of sun and a snoring cat at your feet make a fine way to spend one.
