Walt and June Parked at the Edge of a Gold Field to Watch the Sunset
The fields have turned gold for the season, and Walt and June have parked at the very edge of one to watch the light change. They sit snug together on the open tailgate of their old truck, June resting her head on Walt's shoulder as he smiles out at the stubble and tall grass. A blue bucket of garden stakes sits off to the side, a few yellow leaves have drifted onto the tailgate, and Mabel the tortoiseshell lies in the dirt in front of them, her rich black and copper coat glowing in the low sun as she gazes off toward something rustling in the field.
Fields and farmland are full of interesting sights and smells for a cat, from mice to birds to blowing seed heads, which is why it is easy for an outdoor cat to wander farther than intended. If your cat joins you in open spaces, a harness and lead, or keeping them inside the vehicle with the windows cracked only slightly while you are right there, helps keep them close. Watch out for farm hazards like rodent bait, fertilizers and machinery. An up-to-date microchip and a collar with your phone number are simple insurance in case a curious cat strays.
Not every adventure needs a destination. Sometimes it is enough to sit on a tailgate, watch the sun slip low and listen to the field settle down for the evening, with your favorite people and your favorite cat close by.
