A Slow Walk Down the Dirt Road at Sunset With Abuela and Chispa
The dirt road stretches away between a split-rail fence and tall golden grass, glowing in the last light of the day. Abuela walks it slowly in a blue plaid shirt and her trusty flowered apron, a black leash looped around her wrist and a gentle smile on her face. Trotting at her side is Chispa, mouth open in a happy pant, ears bouncing with every step, her fluffy black and white coat catching the sunset. Fields roll off toward a line of trees and distant hills, and the only sounds are probably crickets and the crunch of gravel underfoot.
Daily walks are one of the simplest, most rewarding habits for both dogs and their people. For a small breed like the Havanese, a couple of moderate walks a day usually covers their exercise needs, along with play at home. For older adults, regular walking is a gentle way to stay active, and having a dog to walk gives a reason to get out the door every day. A comfortable harness, rather than a collar alone, can be easier on a small dog's neck. On country roads, choose times with good visibility and consider a reflective vest or light-up collar near dusk.
No destination is needed for a walk like this. The road, the sunset and good company are reason enough to keep going a little farther.
