Grandpa Poured a Tall Glass of Lemonade. Jasper Took Up His Post.
The porch lantern has just flickered on, and the evening air feels cool and calm. Grandpa, in a green cable-knit cardigan, lifts a tall glass of iced lemonade with a slice of lemon perched on the rim, his eyes half closed as he takes a long, satisfying sip. Around him, a basket, a watering can, garden tools, and a plaid blanket draped over the railing give the porch a well-loved, lived-in feel. Sitting close at his side, chest out and head turned toward the yard, Jasper the Bengal surveys the evening like a small spotted sentry.
A cold glass of lemonade is a classic porch treat, but it is one to keep for the humans. Citrus fruits contain oils and compounds that can irritate a cat's stomach, and many cats dislike the smell of citrus anyway. Sugary drinks offer cats no benefit at all. The better choice is making sure your cat has plenty of fresh water, especially on warm days. Some cats drink more when water is offered in a wide bowl or a gently flowing fountain. Bengals in particular often enjoy moving water, so a fountain may encourage them to stay well hydrated.
The day is winding down, the ice is clinking in the glass, and a loyal cat is keeping watch over the yard. Grandpa could not ask for a better way to end the afternoon, and Jasper would surely agree.
