Grandpa Went to the Farmers Market for Vegetables. Jasper Got the Grand Tour.
Wooden crates of potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and dark green squash line the market stalls, while jars of preserves and woven baskets fill the tables under the white canopy. Grandpa, in a heathered cable-knit cardigan, strolls between the booths with a gentle smile, cradling Jasper the Bengal snugly against his chest. Jasper rests his front paws on Grandpa's arm and looks around with wide green eyes, taking in all the colors, smells, and bustle of a busy Saturday morning.
Most cats are happiest at home, and crowded, noisy places like markets can be overwhelming even for a confident breed like the Bengal. If you do bring a cat on an outing, a few precautions help. A well-fitted harness and leash or a secure pet carrier or backpack with ventilation is much safer than simply holding a cat, since a sudden noise can startle even the calmest animal into leaping. Keep visits short, watch for signs of stress like flattened ears, a twitching tail, or trying to hide, and head home if your cat seems uneasy. Make sure your cat is microchipped and that your contact details are up to date.
Grandpa came for fresh vegetables, but the real highlight of the trip is obvious. Jasper is getting a guided tour of the neighborhood, and judging by the smile on Grandpa's face, both of them are enjoying every minute.
