Saturday at the Farmers Market, and Mochi Knows the Route by Heart
Saturday morning means fresh tomatoes, and Mochi knows the route by heart. Grandpa walks slowly down the aisle of the farmers market in a moss green sweater and gray slacks, his black leash looped comfortably in one hand. Mochi trots ahead on the pavement, glancing back up at Grandpa with that familiar pug expression of total trust. Along the wooden stalls, baskets brim with ripe tomatoes, crates of red apples, bunches of carrots, bright heads of broccoli and lettuce, garlic, and crisp cucumbers, all under canvas awnings that glow in the soft morning light.
Outdoor markets can be great outings for dogs, as long as you check that pets are allowed first, since rules vary by market. Crowds, dropped food, and other dogs can be a lot for some pets, so a short leash and early arrival, before it gets busy, make things easier. Watch the ground for fallen produce and snacks. Grapes and onions, both common at markets, are toxic to dogs, and corn cobs can cause blockages if swallowed. For pugs in particular, a harness rather than a collar is often recommended for walks because it avoids pressure on the throat and airway. Bring water on warm days, too.
Mochi isn't shopping, of course, but he loves the smells, the friendly vendors, and the occasional neighbor who stops to say hello. For Grandpa, the outing is half groceries and half the pleasure of strolling with his favorite companion.
