The First Snow Started Falling, and Grandpa Lifted Mochi Up to the Window

Snowflakes are drifting past the window, and Mochi has the best seat in the house. Grandpa holds the black pug up against his chest, both arms wrapped securely around him, so the little dog can peer out at the white yard and frosted bushes. Mochi's brow is furrowed in concentration, his ears pricked forward, while Grandpa grins with the delight of someone sharing a first snow. He wears a forest green sweater over a blue checked shirt, and behind them the warm room holds a shelf of folded towels and a potted plant.

Short-nosed breeds like pugs handle cold better than heat, but they still aren't built for long winter outings. Their short coats offer limited insulation, so a well-fitted dog sweater or coat can help on chilly walks. Keep outings brief in very cold weather, and watch for signs like shivering, lifting paws, or reluctance to keep going. Salt and de-icing chemicals on sidewalks can irritate paw pads and upset a dog's stomach if licked off, so wiping paws with a damp cloth after a walk is a smart habit. Many dogs also enjoy short, supervised romps in fresh snow before heading back inside to warm up.

For today, though, looking is enough. Grandpa and Mochi can admire the falling snow from the cozy side of the glass, and maybe later, they'll venture out for a quick sniff around the yard.
