It Was Supposed to Be One More Show. The Lamp Is the Only One Still Awake.

The television screen has gone dark, the reading glasses have been set aside on the side table, and the lamp is the only thing still awake. Grandpa slumps in the recliner in a blue sweater, Grandma tucked against his shoulder under a green blanket. Front and center, Rufus has draped his whole head and those velvety ears over the padded armrest, his freckled muzzle squished flat and one eye barely cracked open. It is the classic end-of-evening pileup, the kind that happens when one more show turns into a family nap.

Basset Hounds are known for their love of sleep, and a healthy adult may spend a large part of the day resting. That is normal for many dogs, but sudden changes in sleep habits can be worth noticing. A dog who suddenly seems much more tired, struggles to get comfortable, or snores far more loudly than usual may benefit from a checkup, so talk to your vet if something seems different. For everyday comfort, a supportive bed with low sides helps a long-backed breed like this one rest without strain, and keeping him at a healthy weight is one of the kindest things you can do for his spine and joints.

For now, though, nobody is worried about anything. The remote is somewhere under a cushion, the house is quiet, and three heartbeats are slowing down together in one well-worn chair.
