Elderly couple pouring grain for chickens outside a rustic coop while a happy tricolor Basset Hound stands among the hens. 9 / 40

Grandma and Grandpa Fed the Chickens at Dusk. One Helper Wasn't Exactly a Chicken.

String lights glow along the eaves of a rustic coop as evening settles in. Grandma in a blue flannel shirt pours grain from a scoop, and Grandpa in a flat cap tips a metal pail so feed showers down onto the dirt. Brown hens and a speckled one peck busily around their boots. Right in the middle of the flock stands Rufus, tail curled up, mouth open in a happy pant, looking very pleased with himself for being included. A blue watering can, garden gloves and a row of potted herbs make the little farmyard feel snug and well tended.

Dogs and backyard chickens can share space, but it takes training and supervision. Hounds were bred to follow scent and some dogs have a strong chase instinct, so early introductions should be calm and on leash. Rewarding the dog for staying relaxed around the birds, keeping sessions short, and never leaving them alone together until you are confident are good starting points. Chicken feed is not meant for dogs, and droppings can carry germs, so discourage snacking in the run. Fresh water and a quiet spot away from the coop help everyone feel at ease.

Rufus clearly sees himself as part of the evening crew rather than a predator. The hens, for their part, seem far more interested in dinner than in the hound wagging among them.
