Nobody in Grandpa's Living Room Knows Whether the TV Is Still On

The TV is still on, or maybe it clicked off an hour ago; nobody in this room is awake enough to know. Grandpa has sunk deep into his brown recliner, footrest up, head tipped back, and eyes firmly shut. His vest is rumpled and his hands rest loosely in his lap. Draped over the wide, padded armrest beside him, Domino has gone completely limp, chin flat on the cushion and eyes squeezed closed. A plaid blanket, a mug, and a stack of magazines clutter the side table, and a little houseplant sits on the TV stand.

Recliners are cozy for everyone, but they deserve a little caution in homes with pets. Cats like to crawl underneath or into the gaps of reclining chairs and sofas, especially to nap in the dark space beneath, and the moving mechanism can pinch or trap them when the footrest is lowered. Before closing a recliner, it's a good habit to check underneath and around it, or to gently block the space if your cat likes to hide there. Power recliners need extra attention. A pet bed or blanket on a nearby chair can give your cat a warm, safe place to be close without the risk.

Domino has chosen the armrest, which is the best of both worlds: close to Grandpa, soft, and well clear of the moving parts.

Whatever program was on, it never stood a chance against a warm chair and a sleeping cat.
