Laundry Day at Grandma's Was Going Fine Until the Sheets Started Moving
Clothespins in place, sheets fluttering in the breeze, and a calico in mid-flight. Grandma reaches up to pin a white towel to the clothesline, chuckling as Maple bursts through the hanging laundry with all four paws off the ground, eyes wide and ears back in playful excitement. The crisp white sheets billow around her like curtains on a stage. Behind them, a pale green house, a few potted plants, a blue laundry basket full of wooden pins and a pair of slippers on the patio set the scene for a classic laundry day.
Cats love to dart between hanging fabric for the same reason they love tunnels and boxes: it creates hiding spots and the thrill of a chase. This kind of play can be a great outlet for energy. If you hang laundry outdoors with a cat around, watch for clothespins, which are small enough to be chewed, and be aware that a cat can snag claws in fabric or pull a line down. Indoor cats should stay supervised or on a harness when outside. For a safer version of the game, try a fabric play tunnel or drape an old sheet over chairs indoors for your cat to explore.
Light outdoor chores like hanging laundry can also keep older adults active, with the bonus of sunshine and fresh air.
The sheets may need a second wash, but the entertainment was clearly worth every bit of it.
