Halfway Down the Old Gravel Road, Roy and Copper Stopped Walking
Hazy golden light pours down the gravel road as the sun sinks behind the trees, and Roy and Copper have stopped for a moment to take it all in. Roy, in a green plaid shirt, tan work pants, and brown suspenders, gazes off toward the fields with a quiet, thoughtful expression. Copper stands close at his side, his deep red coat glowing almost copper in the low light, mouth slightly open and eyes fixed on something down the road. Fence posts, stacked firewood, a blue bucket, and potted plants line the rustic edges of the lane, and mist softens the distant trees.
Golden Retrievers were bred as working gun dogs and generally thrive on daily exercise, with walks being a staple of their routine. Regular walks help keep weight in check, which matters for a breed that loves food and can be prone to joint issues. Gravel and rough roads can be hard on paws, so check pads for cuts or stuck stones after longer outings. If you walk around dusk, reflective gear for you and a lighted collar or reflective leash for your dog help drivers spot you on country roads. Dusk is also when wildlife is often active, so a secure leash keeps a curious retriever from bolting after a rabbit or deer.
The road stretches on and the light is fading fast. Soon they will turn for home, but for now, Roy and Copper are perfectly happy just standing still together.
