Roy Brought Out a Sandwich for Lunch. Copper Had a Few Questions About It.
Lunchtime on the wooden bench has drawn a very interested audience. Roy, in a light blue button-up shirt, jeans, and brown suspenders, holds up a thick sandwich stuffed with lettuce, looking down with an amused, knowing smile. Copper has pushed his nose right up to the bread for a long, thorough sniff, his deep red ears hanging softly and his eyes half-closed in concentration. The yard behind them is green and a little overgrown, with a weathered fence, a wooden post, and some potted plants sitting in the dappled shade of a tree.
Golden Retrievers are well known for their enthusiasm about food, and their keen noses rarely miss a sandwich. Some sandwich fillings are fine for dogs in tiny amounts, like plain cooked chicken or turkey, but many common ingredients are not. Onions, garlic, grapes or raisins, and certain seasonings can be harmful, while processed deli meats and cheese are high in salt and fat. Goldens can easily gain weight, which puts extra strain on their joints, so it helps to keep table scraps to a minimum and count treats as part of their daily food. Teaching a reliable "leave it" and rewarding calm waiting can make lunchtime easier for everyone.
Whether Copper scores a bite of crust today is anyone's guess. But one thing is certain: Roy will not be eating this sandwich alone.
