Roy Thought Nobody Was Watching Him Dance in the Kitchen
The kitchen is lit by the warm glow of a small wall lamp, and Roy has started to sway. One hand loosely clenched at his side, shoulders loose, he moves to some tune only he can hear, a big crinkly grin spreading through his white beard. He wears a blue plaid flannel shirt, gray suspenders, and dark work pants. Copper bounces right beside him, mouth open in a joyous pant, plumed tail flagging high behind him, eyes fixed on Roy's face as though waiting to see what the next step will be. A dish towel hangs over the counter, a small succulent sits by the wall, and a stainless dog bowl waits in the corner.
A wagging tail is not always a sign of happiness on its own, but combined with a loose body, soft eyes, and an open, relaxed mouth like Copper's, it is a good indication of a joyful dog. Golden Retrievers are well known for their cheerful, outgoing personalities, and many respond eagerly to their owner's good mood. Simple at-home activities like dancing, short games of tug, or hide-and-seek with treats can add bonding time and light exercise to the day. On smooth kitchen floors, rugs with non-slip backing help prevent slips for both dogs and people, which matters more as everyone gets a little older.
Nobody else is watching, and that is what makes it perfect. A quiet kitchen, an old song, and a dance partner who never steps on your toes is a fine way to spend an evening.
