Grandpa Got Himself One Scoop of Vanilla. He Should Have Eaten It Faster.
The lamp is on, the table is cluttered with keys, a teacup, a spoon, and a plate of fruit, and Grandpa Gus has treated himself to a single scoop of vanilla on a waffle cone. He's holding it out at an angle, smiling softly down at the reason why. Pearl has climbed up with both front paws on the table and leaned in nose first, her pink tongue just touching the top of the scoop and her amber eyes wide with the thrill of the forbidden. Gus doesn't look surprised in the least. It seems this isn't the first time a cone has been shared in this house.
As charming as this moment is, ice cream is not a good snack for cats. Many adult cats have trouble digesting lactose, and dairy can lead to upset stomachs. Ice cream also contains a lot of sugar and fat, and some flavors include chocolate, nuts, raisins, or sugar substitutes that can be dangerous for pets. If you'd like to share a cool treat, look for frozen treats made specifically for cats, or freeze a little of their regular wet food in a small dish for a refreshing lick on a warm day. Plenty of fresh water and a shady spot are the best ways to help a cat beat the heat.
Gus will probably finish the rest of the cone himself, after a gentle reminder to his furry co-pilot. Still, it's hard to blame Pearl for trying. Vanilla on a summer evening is irresistible to just about everyone.
