The Rain Came Down in Sheets. Grandpa and His Little Pink Shadow Didn't Move an Inch.

Rain is coming down in thick sheets beyond the porch railing, blurring the trees into a soft green haze. Under the sagging wooden roof, Grandpa Earl sits gazing out at the storm with a calm, faraway expression, his plaid shirt and suspenders on and his hands resting in his lap. Peaches sits upright against him, her pink, wrinkled body pressed close to his chest and her big ears tilted toward the sound of the rain, green eyes fixed on the falling water. The porch is wonderfully cluttered, with an orange watering can, a basket, a plaid blanket draped over the railing, a fern in a pot, and a pair of boots tucked by the steps.

Many cats enjoy watching rain from a sheltered spot. The movement, sounds, and smells of a storm give them plenty to observe, and that kind of gentle stimulation can be good for indoor cats. For a Sphynx, though, damp, cool weather calls for extra care. Without fur, they lose heat quickly, and a chilly breeze can leave them shivering. Staying close to a warm person, as Peaches is doing, is one of their favorite strategies. A blanket, a cat sweater, or bringing them inside when the air turns cold can keep them comfortable. Make sure porches are secure, so a startled cat can't dash out into the storm.

No one is in a hurry here. The rain will pass when it's ready, and until then, Earl and Peaches have a dry seat, each other, and a soothing soundtrack drumming on the roof.
