Grandpa Went to Pick a Pumpkin. Ziggy Decided He Was in Charge.

Under a gray autumn sky, the pumpkin patch is a tangle of browning vines, wooden crates, and bright orange gourds scattered across the dirt. Ziggy has taken the lead, padding down the path with his tail up and his whiskers forward, looking very much like the one in charge of this outing. A few steps behind, Hank strolls along in muddy boots and overalls, hands loose at his sides, smiling at the cat as if he's happy to let somebody else pick the pumpkin this year.

Some cats really can enjoy outdoor adventures with their people, and Bengals, with their active, curious nature, are often good candidates. The safest way to explore is with a well-fitted harness and leash, introduced gradually indoors first so the cat gets used to the feel. Start in quiet places, keep outings short, and let the cat set the pace. Farm fields and gardens can hold hidden hazards like sharp tools, fertilizer, and other animals, so stay close and keep an eye out. Make sure your cat is up to date on vaccines and parasite prevention before regular outdoor trips, and ask your vet what makes sense for your area.

Whatever pumpkin ends up on the porch this fall, it's clear who did the choosing. Hank will carry it home, of course, but Ziggy will get all the credit.
