The Rain Wouldn't Stop, So Hank and Ziggy Found the Best Seats on the Porch
Rain is coming down in soft gray sheets past the porch railing, soaking the trees and the grass beyond, but under the roof it's dry and quiet. Hank sits in a wooden chair with a plaid blanket tossed over the back, his green work shirt and overalls rumpled, looking out at the downpour with a calm, faraway expression. Ziggy sits upright next to his knee, ears tipped toward the sound of the water, eyes fixed on the yard. A row of potted plants along the railing drinks up the overflow.
Rainy days can actually be good days for cats. Many enjoy the sound and movement of rain from a safe, sheltered spot, and a porch or window gives them plenty to watch. Some cats, though, are unsettled by storms, especially thunder. Signs of stress include hiding, crouching low, dilated pupils, or pacing. Giving a nervous cat a quiet interior room, a covered bed, or a cardboard box to tuck into can help, and staying calm yourself sends a reassuring signal. If storms consistently cause a lot of distress, talk to your vet about ways to help your cat feel safer.
Ziggy seems firmly in the camp of rain enjoyers. He and Hank don't need to say anything to each other; the weather is doing all the talking, and they're both content just to listen.
