Grandma Ruth Fell Asleep in the Hammock. Saffron Stayed Wide Awake.

AI imageabyssinian cathammockbackyard nap

Evening light glows through the sliding glass doors behind the yard, and the porch steps are lined with sandals, a green watering can, and a pot of succulents. Strung between two sturdy tree trunks, a cream rope hammock cradles Ruth, who has drifted off completely, eyes closed, head tilted back, silver braid draped down her denim shirt. Saffron, however, is wide awake. The Abyssinian has settled on Ruth's chest with her front paws resting on her arm, ears up, amber eyes alert, keeping a careful lookout over the backyard while her favorite person sleeps.

That watchful posture is very cat-like. Even when relaxed, cats tend to keep part of their attention on their surroundings, which is a survival instinct left over from their wild ancestors, who were both hunters and potential prey. Choosing to stay close to a sleeping person is often a sign of a strong bond. Hammocks can be a cozy spot to share, but they do sway and tip, so it helps to make sure a cat can jump down easily and that nothing sharp lies beneath. Outdoor naps are also a good time to remember sun protection and plenty of water for everyone.

Ruth will wake up eventually, probably to find Saffron still in exactly the same place. Some guards take their jobs very seriously, especially when the pay is a warm lap.
