Dottie Laid Out Her Prettiest Fabric for the New Quilt. Pearl Noticed Too.

The worktable has vanished under a soft landslide of fabric: pastel quilt squares stacked in tidy piles, rose-patterned cotton folded in heaps, and a half-finished patchwork spreading across Dottie's lap. Golden late-afternoon light spills through the window over potted plants and family photos on the shelves. Dottie, silver hair in a loose bun and cream cardigan soft around her shoulders, bends over her needle with quiet concentration. And right in the middle of the prettiest pile of floral fabric, Pearl has curled up into a perfect white crescent, eyes shut, paws tucked, utterly asleep.

Soft fabric piles are a cat magnet: warm, cushiony, and full of the scent of their favorite person. But sewing projects come with some real risks for pets. Thread and string are particularly dangerous, because a cat that swallows a long strand can suffer a serious intestinal blockage requiring emergency care. Needles and pins are hazards too, whether swallowed or stepped on. Keeping thread spools in a closed container, using a lidded pincushion, and sweeping for stray pins after each session go a long way. If you ever see thread hanging from a cat's mouth, don't pull it; call your vet.

Today, Pearl seems content to nap rather than play, which makes her the ideal quilting partner. The quilt will be finished one square at a time, and it's already been thoroughly approved.
