Grandpa Was Busy Flipping Pancakes. Someone Below Was Counting Every One.
Two golden pancakes sizzle in the cast iron pan, and Grandpa Gus has the spatula ready for the next flip. He leans over the stove in his plaid shirt and well-worn fishing vest, completely focused on getting the color just right. At his feet sits Sunny, the yellow Lab, with her blue collar, her chin tipped up and her eyes fixed on the skillet with total devotion. She is not begging, exactly. She is simply making sure nobody forgets she is there. A small bowl of blueberries waits on the counter, and morning light spills across the cozy wooden cabinets.
Labradors are known for their big appetites, and a kitchen full of breakfast smells is about as tempting as life gets for them. Teaching a calm sit or a spot to wait while you cook can keep both of you safe around a hot stove. Plain pancake without syrup or butter is not toxic for most dogs, but it adds calories that Labs do not need, since the breed tends to gain weight easily. A few blueberries are generally considered a safer treat. Keep any recipe that might contain chocolate chips, raisins, or certain sugar substitutes like xylitol well out of reach, because those can be dangerous for dogs. When in doubt about a food, talk to your vet.
Sunny may not get a whole pancake this morning, but she clearly believes good manners are eventually rewarded. With a cook this kind, she is probably right.
