Grandpa Set Out Two Chairs for the Sunset. The Lab Didn't Use Hers.

AI imagelabrador retrieversunsetbackyard

Two green camp chairs face the fading sky, and only one of them is in use. Grandpa Gus leans back with his glasses on and his gaze toward the fence line, where the last orange glow slips behind the neighbor's roof. Sunny has skipped the empty chair entirely. She sits on the concrete right against his armrest, ears relaxed, nose up, looking out at the evening as though she, too, is waiting for the sun to finish. Potted plants, a few fallen leaves, and a wooden fence give the small backyard a lived-in, end-of-season feeling.

Spending time outdoors at dusk is a simple pleasure that can be good for people and dogs. Fresh air, a change of scenery, and the slow pace of an evening wind-down make it easier to relax. For dogs, sitting outside is mentally enriching, since there are sounds and smells everywhere to process. A few practical notes: as the weather cools, older Labs may appreciate a mat or blanket instead of cold concrete, which can be hard on aging joints. Dusk is also when some insects are most active, so keep up with whatever flea, tick, and mosquito protection your vet recommends. And in fall, keep an eye out for mushrooms popping up in the yard, since some types can be harmful if a curious dog decides to taste one.

That empty second chair might be for a visitor someday. For now, Sunny prefers the spot that is closest to Grandpa, and she is not giving it up.
