Grandpa Brought Home One Scoop of Vanilla. He Should Have Bought Two.
Grandpa Gus came in from the heat with a single scoop of vanilla in a waffle cone, and he never stood a chance. Sunny has her nose right up against it, tongue out mid-lick, eyes rolled up toward him with a look that is half apology and half triumph. Grandpa doesn't seem to mind one bit. He is grinning down at her under his white mustache, holding the cone steady so she can reach. The room around them is all comfort: a couch heaped with knitted throws, a stack of books, a mug of tea, reading glasses, and a potted plant soaking up the window light.
As charming as the moment is, regular ice cream is not an ideal treat for dogs. Many adult dogs do not digest lactose well, so dairy can lead to gas, diarrhea, or an upset stomach. Ice cream is also high in sugar and fat, which is not great for Labradors, a breed that gains weight easily. Some flavors are truly dangerous: chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, raisins, and products sweetened with xylitol can all be toxic. If you want to share a frozen treat on a hot day, safer options include plain frozen yogurt in small amounts, frozen banana slices, or ice cubes made from low-sodium broth. Ask your vet if you are unsure.
Maybe this was a one-time lick, or maybe Sunny knows exactly how soft-hearted her grandpa is. Either way, that cone is shrinking fast.
