Grandpa Went to the Farmers Market for Peaches. The Lab Went for Everything Else.
Wooden crates of red apples, cucumbers, leeks, and tomatoes line the sidewalk, and Grandpa Gus is taking it all in at an easy stroll. His cap sits back on his head, his vest pockets bulge with odds and ends, and he wears the pleased expression of a man who already knows which stall has the best peaches. Sunny trots ahead on her leash, mouth open in a wide, happy grin, ears flopping with every step. Canopies, hanging baskets of flowers, a mailbox, and a row of cozy houses make the market feel like the heart of a small town on a weekend afternoon.
Taking a dog to a farmers market can be a great outing, full of new smells, friendly people, and practice staying calm in a crowd. Start with a quieter time of day if your dog is new to busy places, and keep the leash short so your dog does not help itself to low-hanging produce or nose into other shoppers' bags. Bring water, especially on warm days, since pavement and crowds can make dogs heat up quickly. Be mindful that not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and some markets do not allow pets at all, so check the rules first. Labradors are usually social and eager to greet everyone, which makes polite leash manners worth practicing ahead of time.
Grandpa may come home with a bag of vegetables. Sunny will come home with a hundred new smells and the satisfaction of having greeted half the town.
