Grandpa Rolled Down the Truck Window. The Dachshund Took Over the View.
The paint is faded, the bench seat is worn, and the window crank has seen better decades, but this old pickup is clearly a favorite. Grandpa Ray sits behind the wheel with his glasses on and a soft, satisfied smile, one arm resting easy. Next to him, propped up at the open window with her front paws on the door, Pickles the dapple Dachshund is ready for adventure. Her spotted brown coat shines in the sunlight, her long ears hang neatly, and she gazes straight ahead with a calm, confident little face, as if she is the one giving directions. Through the windows, a neighborhood with potted plants and a parked bicycle slides into view.
Car rides can be a highlight of a dog's day, but small dogs are especially vulnerable in a moving vehicle. Dachshunds can be badly hurt by sudden stops or by trying to leap out of a window, and their long backs make awkward falls more dangerous. Many vets recommend a crash-tested harness clipped to a seat belt, a secured travel crate, or a raised booster seat that keeps a small dog safely restrained. Front seats and airbags are not ideal for pets, so the back seat is usually safer. Keep windows open just a crack, and lift your Dachshund in and out of the truck rather than letting them jump.
Wherever Ray is headed, Pickles has no intention of being left at home. Every errand is an adventure when you have the window seat.
