Grandpa Grabbed the Hose to Rinse the Car. The Dachshund Saw Her Chance.
One hand holds a soapy blue sponge against the side of the car, the other aims the garden hose, and Grandpa Ray is grinning, because the car wash has officially been hijacked. Pickles leaps up in front of him on her short hind legs, ears flying, coat soaked and glistening, mouth wide open as she snaps at the arc of water pouring down. Her brown collar is dripping, and puddles spread across the driveway under her paws. A bucket of sponges, a coiled green hose, a bicycle, and a garage door complete the picture of a sunny weekend chore gone delightfully off track.
Some dogs adore water play, and a gentle hose game can be a fun way to cool off on a hot day. A few precautions keep it safe. Use a soft spray rather than a powerful jet, and avoid aiming directly at the face, ears, or nose. Do not let your dog gulp huge amounts of water while playing, since swallowing too much can be harmful. Keep car soaps, waxes, and cleaners out of reach, because they are not safe to lick. For Dachshunds, watch the jumping, too. Their long spines make repeated leaping on hard ground a concern, so keep the stream low so they can play with all four paws down. Towel them off afterward, especially those floppy ears.
The car may still have a few soap streaks, but nobody here is complaining. Some chores are just more fun with a soggy assistant.
