Grandma Edie Came for Squash. Moose Had a Different Plan for the Evening.
String lights glow over the market tents as the evening crowd thins out, and Grandma Edie has stopped in the middle of the aisle to share a smile with Moose. Her white hair is swept back, her olive quilted vest is zipped against the cool air, and the big red and white Saint Bernard gazes up at her with his mouth open in a happy pant. Behind them, wooden crates overflow with squash, cabbages, and leafy greens, and a lone orange pumpkin sits at the edge of the path like it is waiting its turn to be admired.
Saint Bernards were bred to work in the snowy Swiss Alps, and they still carry that calm, steady nature. Most are gentle giants who enjoy people and tend to handle busy places well once they are used to them. Crowded spots like markets are a good test of manners, so a sturdy leash, a well-practiced sit, and short visits help a large dog stay relaxed. Watch for dropped food too. Things like onions, grapes, and chocolate can be harmful to dogs, and a curious nose at ground level finds them fast. Bringing water is smart, since these heavy-coated dogs can warm up quickly even on mild evenings.
The best part of a market trip is not always what ends up in the basket. Sometimes it is a quiet look between old friends under the twinkle lights, with a whole stall of fresh produce in the background and nowhere to rush off to. Moose seems to agree that the shopping can wait.
