The Deal Was One Tiny Lick of Ice Cream. Moose Read the Fine Print Differently.
One lick. That was the deal, and Moose is taking it very seriously. Grandma Edie, her white hair pinned up loosely and her green quilted vest over a gray tee, holds out a vanilla cone with a patient smile while the Saint Bernard sneaks his tongue onto the very top scoop. His eyes are half closed in pure bliss. The room around them is soft and bright, with a little potted plant on the windowsill and a towel hanging in the background, the perfect setting for a lazy summer treat.
Ice cream is a classic hot-day pleasure, but it is not ideal for dogs. Many adult dogs do not digest dairy well, and the sugar adds up quickly, especially for big breeds that need to watch their weight. Some flavors are a real problem: chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol are toxic to dogs. A safer way to share the fun is a frozen treat made for dogs, or a homemade version with plain yogurt or blended banana frozen in a small cup. Saint Bernards also overheat easily because of their thick coats, so shade, cool water, and indoor rest on warm days matter more than any dessert.
Still, one tiny lick of vanilla is the kind of memory that makes a summer afternoon. Grandma Edie gets her cone back, mostly intact, and Moose gets the satisfaction of knowing he was part of the treat. That sounds like a fair trade to both of them.
