Ken Went Out to Check on His Pumpkins. Duke Came Along for the Fun Part.

Orange pumpkins peek out from tangled, drying vines, and the porch light has just switched on as evening settles. Grandpa Ken strolls slowly through his little pumpkin patch in a brown sweater vest and blue shirt, one hand drifting down toward Duke's head. The fawn Boxer trots right beside him, mouth open in a wide, happy grin, ears flopping, looking delighted to be out exploring among the gourds. A wooden fence, autumn shrubs, and the warm glow of the house in the background give the scene a cozy, early-fall feel.

Plain, cooked pumpkin is a popular fall treat for dogs and is often included in pet foods for its fiber. If you want to share some, plain cooked pumpkin or unsweetened canned pumpkin puree in small amounts is the safest choice, not pumpkin pie filling, which contains sugar and spices. Raw pumpkin, stems, and the vines in a patch aren't great for dogs to chew, and carved jack-o'-lanterns can grow mold quickly. During Halloween season, also keep candy, especially chocolate, and candles well away from curious noses. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, talk to your vet before adding new foods.

Ken may be checking which pumpkins are ready to pick, but Duke is simply enjoying the walk. With that big Boxer grin, he might be the happiest thing growing in the whole patch.
