Grandpa Ken Brought Out the Popcorn for Movie Night. Duke Got There First.
Movie night was going perfectly, right up until the popcorn bowl came out. Grandpa Ken, in a brown sweater vest and plaid shirt, sits on the couch holding a big glass bowl of fluffy popcorn in his lap, smiling with amused resignation. Duke has wasted no time. His wrinkled muzzle is pushed straight into the bowl, brown eyes glancing sideways as if he hopes nobody will notice. A few stray kernels have already escaped onto the coffee table, where folded napkins wait. A potted plant and a gray winter window complete the cozy living room.
Plain, air-popped popcorn without salt or butter is sometimes given to dogs as an occasional snack, but movie-style popcorn is a different story. Butter, oil, salt, and flavorings can upset a dog's stomach, and too much salt isn't healthy for pets. Unpopped and half-popped kernels can crack teeth or become stuck in the gums, and some can be a choking risk. If your dog loves to join movie night, try offering a few dog treats or a long-lasting chew so it has something safe to enjoy while you watch. Keeping the bowl up high helps, too.
Ken may have to share a little more than he planned tonight, but judging by his smile, he's not too upset. With a happy dog and a good movie, a few lost kernels seem like a fair trade.
