Ken Only Wanted to Rinse Off the Car. Duke Had Been Waiting All Week for This.

The old dark-blue sedan is glistening with soapy water, but the car wash has been officially hijacked. Grandpa Ken, in a cream sweater vest over a blue shirt, holds a dripping blue sponge in one hand and the hose in the other, smiling with good-natured patience. Duke has launched himself up toward the spray, front paw lifted, mouth wide open, trying to catch every splash. Water sprays in glittering arcs in the late-day light. A blue bucket, a scrub brush, potted plants, and a weathered wooden fence round out the busy driveway scene.

Plenty of dogs, Boxers included, love chasing the spray from a hose, and it can be a fun way to burn off energy on a warm day. Keep the water pressure gentle and avoid spraying directly at the face, ears, or nose. Make sure your dog doesn't drink large amounts of hose water while playing, since gulping lots of water quickly can cause problems. Car-washing soap, waxes, and cleaners shouldn't be licked or swallowed, so rinse your dog's coat and paws with plain water afterward. Also watch for antifreeze or oil drips on driveways, which are very dangerous to pets.

The car may come out a little less clean than planned, but Ken doesn't seem to mind. Some chores are better with a splash-happy helper, and Duke is having the best afternoon of his week.
