Grandma Odessa Set Out Two Lawn Chairs. Pearl Didn't Want Her Own.
Two green lawn chairs sit in the backyard grass, angled toward the late-day light. Grandma Odessa has settled into one in a soft beige cardigan over a blue floral blouse, glasses on, smiling a peaceful, faraway smile. The other chair sits empty beside her, because Pearl has opted for a closer seat. The little Maltese is tucked right up against Odessa, her fluffy face turned toward the yard, dark eyes thoughtful and a bit sleepy. Behind them, the house is ringed by potted plants, a laundry basket, a watering can, and a scattering of garden tools, all the signs of a full and happy day.
There is something special about simply sitting outside together at the end of the day. For many older adults, time outdoors, even in a backyard chair, offers fresh air, natural light, and a chance to unwind. Small dogs tend to want to be close, and many Maltese will choose a lap or a lean over any bed. If you spend evenings outside, keep in mind that mosquitoes become more active around dusk and can transmit heartworm, so year-round prevention from your vet is important in many areas. A light layer for a small dog can also help as evenings cool down.
Pearl's expression says she has no intention of moving, and Odessa does not seem to mind one bit. The empty chair can stay empty.
Sometimes the best view of the evening is not the sky at all. It is the friend right beside you.
