Ruth and Harold Sat Down for Their Evening Duet. Saffron Took the Last Seat on the Bench.
The old upright piano has scratches on its wood and slightly yellowed keys, and it still sounds lovely. Ruth and Harold sit close together, playing a gentle duet from sheet music propped on the stand. Ruth, in a warm mustard sweater with her glasses pushed into her curly silver hair, smiles tenderly at Harold, and he, in a green cardigan and glasses, looks back at her with a happy, proud expression. Perched on the edge of the wooden bench beside them, Saffron sits upright with her paws neatly together, her tall ears and golden eyes facing forward like the most attentive audience member in the room.
Many cats seem to enjoy being around music, and some respond to gentle, calm sounds by relaxing or settling nearby. Others may be startled by loud or sudden noises, since cats have very sensitive hearing. If a cat chooses to sit near you while you play, it is usually a sign they are comfortable. Pianos are also a common draw for cats because the bench, lid, and top of the instrument make great perches with a view. Keeping the volume moderate and letting the cat come and go freely helps keep music time pleasant for everyone.
Saffron does not seem the least bit bothered by the music. In fact, she looks as though she might be judging the performance, possibly favorably.
Every musician deserves an audience, and Ruth and Harold have one of the most devoted listeners imaginable.
