Harold and Ruth Cast Their Lines Off the Old Dock. Saffron Had a Plan for Any Catch.
The dock is old and mossy at the edges, with planks worn silver by years of weather, and it is the perfect place for an unhurried afternoon of fishing. Harold sits on the boards in a blue cap and plaid flannel, smiling contentedly behind his glasses, while Ruth beside him in a soft gray sweater holds her rod with both hands and grins at something across the water. Tackle boxes, coiled line, and assorted gear are scattered nearby. Front and center, Saffron sits on the dock with her big ears up and her golden eyes looking off toward the water, seemingly the most interested of anyone in whether the fish will bite.
Cats and fishing spots have a long, natural connection, and many cats are fascinated by fish and moving water. Still, a dock comes with hazards for a curious feline. Fishhooks, lures, and fishing line can cause serious injuries if a cat plays with or swallows them, so tackle boxes should stay closed and loose line should be gathered up. Bait and fish scraps can also attract a cat's attention. Raw fish is not recommended as a regular food for cats, and a swallowed hook or line is an emergency that requires a vet. Supervision near water is always wise.
Saffron looks fully prepared to inspect any catch that comes out of that pond. Harold and Ruth seem perfectly happy to let her keep watch while they wait.
Fish or no fish, it is a lovely way to spend a quiet afternoon by the water, with a curious cat as the official supervisor.
