Abuela Carmen Lay Down in the Grass for a Nap. Mango Found the Perfect Pillow.

Out on the lawn, an afternoon nap has turned into the sweetest cuddle. Abuela Carmen lies on her side on a soft blanket spread over the grass, eyes closed, a pink scrunchie holding her gray hair, her floral apron still on. Snuggled right up against her, Mango has pressed his fluffy orange face to her cheek, eyes shut tight, paws tucked in and his long tail curled around his body. Both of them are fast asleep. Sunlight falls across the green lawn, and a wooden fence lined with potted plants stands in the background.

If you and your cat enjoy lawn time, it's worth thinking about what's in the grass. Many lawn fertilizers, weed killers, and pest treatments can be harmful to pets, either through licking paws after walking on treated grass or through direct contact. Choosing pet-safe products, following label instructions about how long to keep animals off treated areas, and storing chemicals securely all help. Cats also commonly nibble grass, which is generally thought to be a normal behavior, so making sure your lawn is untreated, or offering a pot of indoor cat grass, gives them a safe option.

For now, Mango and Carmen have only one thing on their minds, and that's rest. The sun is warm, the blanket is soft, and they've got each other. Some of the best naps are the ones you never planned.
