Grandpa Ken Fell Asleep in His Recliner. Then Someone Noticed Where Mochi Was Sleeping.
The TV is still on standby, a lamp glows on the side table, and the only sound in the room is probably soft, steady snoring. Grandpa Ken has drifted off in his brown recliner, glasses still perched on his nose, head tipped back, hands resting in the folds of his cable-knit sweater vest. Above him, draped across the very top of the chair like a fuzzy headrest cover, lies Mochi. The tiny Yorkie has her chin flopped over the edge, eyes shut tight, paws dangling. Framed family pictures, a stack of books, a glass of water, and a folded plaid blanket crowd the cozy room around them.
Small dogs often love high perches where they can stay close to their people and keep an eye on the room, and the top of a couch or chair is a classic choice. The tricky part is getting down. For tiny breeds like Yorkshire Terriers, repeated jumps from furniture can be hard on their legs and joints, and a sleepy tumble can lead to injury. Pet steps or a small ramp beside a favorite chair give them a safer way up and down, and most dogs learn to use them quickly with a few treats. Keeping a soft rug below favorite perches adds a little extra cushioning too. If your small dog starts limping or skipping steps, talk to your vet.
For now, nobody is going anywhere. The show they were supposedly watching will have to wait, because this afternoon belongs to a long, peaceful nap for two.
