Grandpa Ken Just Wanted a Quiet Lemonade on the Porch. Mochi Wanted the Spotlight.
A shady porch, a warm afternoon, and a tall glass of lemonade with ice and a lemon wedge: Grandpa Ken has found his idea of luxury. He sits on a weathered bench in a tan cardigan over a checked shirt, eyes cast down behind his glasses, quietly sipping through a straw. Mochi, however, refuses to be a background character. The little Yorkie has scooted to the front, her rust-colored collar peeking from her silver-blue fur, one ear flopped and one ear up, staring ahead with a serious, slightly skeptical expression. Potted plants, a white porch railing, and dappled green trees fill the scene behind them.
While people reach for lemonade on hot days, dogs need plain fresh water, and some dogs are surprisingly picky drinkers. A few simple tricks can help encourage a small dog to stay hydrated. Keep water bowls clean and refilled often, since some dogs avoid stale water. Place a bowl in the shade on the porch as well as one indoors. A few ice cubes in the bowl can make drinking more interesting for some pups, and adding a little water to their regular food is another option. Ceramic or stainless steel bowls are easy to clean. If your dog seems to be drinking much more or much less than usual, it is worth mentioning to your vet.
Mochi will stick with her water bowl, but she is clearly enjoying the shade just as much as Ken is. Lemonade or not, this is exactly how a slow summer afternoon is supposed to feel.
