Grandpa Ken Set Up the Checkerboard on the Porch. His Opponent Was Not What You'd Expect.
A checkerboard sits on a rough wooden table out on the porch, red and black pieces mid-battle, and Grandpa Ken has just slid one forward with a thoughtful fingertip. He wears a green cable-knit sweater vest over a plaid shirt, his glasses low on his nose, eyes lifted toward his opponent with a gentle, knowing look. That opponent, apparently, is Mochi. The Yorkie has rested her chin flat on the table beside the board, paws tucked in front, eyes half lidded as though she is calculating three moves ahead or, more likely, considering a nap. A wicker basket, slippers, a tote bag, and a few dog toys clutter the porch behind them.
Board games like checkers are a classic pastime, and keeping the mind engaged with puzzles, games, and social activities is widely encouraged for healthy aging. Pets can add to that sense of routine and company. Small game pieces, though, are worth keeping an eye on when a dog is nearby. Checkers, dice, and tokens are just the right size for a curious pup to pick up, chew, or swallow, which could lead to choking or a blockage. Packing games away after playing and keeping fallen pieces off the floor is an easy habit. Offering your dog a chew toy of their own during game time gives them something safe to focus on.
Mochi does not appear to have any interest in stealing pieces today. She simply wants to be close, chin on the table, keeping Ken company while he plots his next jump.
