Grandpa Ken Rolled Out His Yoga Mat for Morning Stretches. Mochi Joined In Her Own Way.
A green yoga mat has been rolled out across the living room floor, and Grandpa Ken is easing into a seated stretch, legs out in front of him, reaching gently toward his bare toes. He wears an olive sweater vest over a gray shirt, glasses on, and a calm, satisfied smile suggests this is a familiar morning routine. Right beside him on the mat, Mochi has flopped down with her front legs stretched long in front of her, chin up, as if she has decided this is her kind of exercise. A scattering of dog toys, a rope tug, and a basket of blankets sit nearby, while family pictures and a potted plant line the cabinet behind them.
Gentle stretching is a popular way for older adults to stay flexible and comfortable, and doing it at home on a mat makes it easy to fit into the day. Moving slowly, breathing steadily, and never forcing a stretch to the point of pain are good general rules, and anyone starting a new exercise routine should check with their doctor first. Dogs, it turns out, are natural stretchers too. Many stretch long and low after waking, with front legs extended and rear end up, a pose that inspired a famous yoga name. Having a pet join a stretching session adds some fun and can make it easier to stick with a routine day after day.
Mochi may be resting more than stretching, but she has absolutely nailed the relaxed part of the practice. Ken could not ask for a more devoted workout partner.
