Grandpa Earl Sat Down in His Old Rocker. Within Minutes the Whole Room Was Asleep.

Gentle light from a nearby window spills over a quiet, lived-in room. Grandpa Earl has settled into an old wooden rocking chair, his denim overalls creased at the knees, plaid shirt sleeves loose, reading glasses pushed up on his forehead. His hands are folded over his middle, and his eyes have slipped shut in a peaceful, smiling doze. Down on the woven rug, Pepper has flopped onto her side, her scruffy black and silver coat a little rumpled, beard resting on the floor, eyes closed tight. A side table beside them holds a mug, a pair of glasses, and a remote, and a houseplant soaks up the light by the window.

Rocking chairs are wonderfully soothing, but they come with a small hazard that pet owners sometimes overlook. A dog or cat lying close to the runners can get a paw or tail pinched as the chair rocks back. Getting in the habit of glancing down before rocking, or giving your pet a bed placed just out of range, prevents painful surprises. A dog bed or mat nearby also gives them a defined, comfortable spot to settle. Miniature Schnauzers, like many companion breeds, tend to want to be close to their people, so offering a cozy spot within arm's reach often satisfies them without putting them in harm's way.

Neither of them seems likely to move for quite a while. The house is quiet, the chair is still, and Earl and Pepper have both decided the best plan for the afternoon is no plan at all.
