The Laundry Basket Was Waiting on the Porch. Grandpa Earl and Pepper Had Other Plans.

A soft morning haze hangs over the garden, blurring the fence and the trees into pale green shapes, and the old wooden porch swing has stopped moving altogether. Grandpa Earl is sound asleep, head tipped back against the slats, glasses still on his nose, the bib of his denim overalls rumpled over a khaki work shirt. Draped across his lap and belly is Pepper, sprawled like a fuzzy blanket, her bearded chin resting on his leg and her eyes peacefully closed. Potted plants, a laundry basket, and a garden hose sit along the porch, waiting patiently for a chore day that clearly is not happening yet.

That distinguished beard is one of the Miniature Schnauzer's signature features, and it does take a little upkeep. Food, water, and whatever the dog has been sniffing can collect in the long facial hair, so many owners wipe the beard with a damp cloth after meals and comb it through a few times a week to prevent tangles and odor. Using a shallow, wide bowl can help keep the beard a bit cleaner at mealtime. The rest of the wiry coat benefits from regular brushing, and most Schnauzers visit a groomer every several weeks to keep their classic trimmed look. Regular handling during grooming also helps dogs stay calm about being touched.

Right now, of course, nobody is thinking about grooming. Pepper's beard is resting exactly where she wants it, and Earl's only job this morning is to keep breathing slow and steady.
